Parkinson’s Support
What is Parkinson’s disease?
Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects the central nervous system and causes movement disorders. It is a chronic and progressive disease.
In Portugal, it is estimated that the disease affects about 20,000 people, being more frequent in people over 60 years old.
Symptoms:
- Tremor: It is the most well-known symptom, usually starting in a hand, arm or leg. The tremor typically occurs at rest and improves with movement.
- Muscle rigidity: Muscle stiffness can cause difficulty in movement and pain.
- Slowness of movement, making simple activities like walking, dressing or eating more time-consuming and difficult.
- Difficulty maintaining posture and tendency to fall.
- Depression and anxiety.
- Sleep disturbances.
Risk factors for Parkinson’s disease:
- Age: The risk of Parkinson’s increases with age, being more common in people over 60 years old.
- Family history: Having a close relative with Parkinson’s increases the risk of developing the disease.
- Genetics: Certain genes increase the risk of Parkinson’s, but the presence of these genes doesn’t necessarily mean the disease will develop.
Treatment of Parkinson’s disease:
There is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, but there are treatments that can help control symptoms and improve quality of life. These treatments include:- Medications to increase dopamine levels in the brain.
- Brain surgery (deep brain stimulation) in selected and advanced cases.
- Physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy to improve mobility, functional independence and communication.
